Chemistry Homework

Define: Matter, pure substance, compound, element, mixture, solution, suspension, colloid and know whether items on a list are a pure substance, mixture and what kind of pure substance or mixture.

Describe the two types of mixtures. Be able to categorize them and give examples of each.

Be able to complete a graphic organizer for the classification of matter.

Be able to explain what solvent, solute and solution are and give examples of each.

List different separation techniques: filtration, distillation, evaporation (boiling point), chromatography, magnetism, density, solubility, etc. and know when it is appropriate to use them. You will have to describe how to separate a mixture as an essay question on the test.

Be able to identify a physical and a chemical change and the indicators of each.

Classify physical properties as intensive or extensive properties of matter.

Name the 4 states of matter and be able to explain the kinetic molecular theory for each.

Define: sublimation, condensation, evaporation, deposition, freezing, melting and explain what is required (energy loss or gain) to achieve the change in state. (according to the kinetic molecular theory)

Be able to define heat of fusion and heat of fusion, heat of vaporization, heat of formation, and heat of dissolution.

Be able to recognize molecular level drawings of solid, liquid, and gas state.

Be able to recognize molecular level drawings of mixtures, compounds and elements.
