The final paper for this class must conform to the criteria below. The rubric for grading follows.

  • Any social issue may serve as the general topic of your paper provided that your paper:

o   Is argumentative

o   Serves to present a unique perspective, your perspective, on the issue

o   Culminates in the synthesis of thorough, question-based research from a variety of sources

  • The final paper must conform to standard MLA format (See the Little Seagull style guide for help.)

o   In general, the paper must:

  • Be Double-spaced
  • Be Typed in Calibri, Calisto, Courier, or Times New Roman 12 point font
  • Be 7 pages in length not including the Works Cited page (or title page if you choose to provide one)
  • Have standard 1-inch margins
  • Contain properly cited sources
  • Accurately include internal citations for all quotes, paraphrases, and summaries
  • A total of 7-10 sources are needed for your paper. They may be from:

o   Online databases

o   Scholarly or peer-reviewed journals

o   Newspapers or popular periodicals

o   Websites ending in .edu, .gov, .mil, (.org and .com are to be looked at carefully for bias)

o   Personal interviews

o   You may not cite the following sources for information:

  • Wikipedia
  • Article abstracts
  • Keep in mind that your last name and the page number should appear in the Header of each page of your research paper.
  • Any charts or graphs included must be properly cited and should be fully explained in detail within your paper. To the extent possible, charts and graphs should be embedded with text wrap to minimize the amount of space used to convey information.
  • The paper is due via Safe Assign through BlackBoard. That means you must turn your paper in electronically.
  • The paper is due on the final day of class.

o   Turning in the paper 1 week early will give you a 10-point bonus.

 

 

  • Please plan ahead and make an appointment to visit the writing center to have someone proofread your work prior to the last week of class. At the English 112 level, you are expected to produce grammatically correct papers.
