Description: The Task

Someone once said “live out your imagination, not your history.” It seems to me that imagination and day dreaming are practical skills: they allow us to enact our planning of future actions without regard to our past histories. That’s not to say dumping our pasts is easy: but history does tend to constrain. In this practical activity we want you to use your imagination (it is allowed) and work-out what sport will become in 2020. In particular, we want you to think about the occupations in sport that will be thriving, or about to thrive, in 2020. As sure as your God made little green apples some occupations will be in terminal decline by the start of the next decade: it just would not do for you to be pursuing a future that is dying.

1.So put to use your imagination – ask yourself what sports will be played in 2020, who will play them and how will they be played? Then write a job description (around 150 words) for an occupation in sport in 2020 (ideally it is one that should appeal to you) – it might be useful to use the two lectures given by IA and the readings (2020 1 and 2020 2). Also look below at How to Write a Job Description.

2.Once you have written the job description put it in your portfolio and refer to it to complete the Imagination and Reflection Sheet (below)

How to Write a Job Description (Around 150 Words) – remember put the job description in your portfolio together with the Imagination and Reflection Sheet.

For the purposes of this activity it might be best to think about a job description as a written depiction of a job. This depiction must connect with and lure prospective candidates with the requisite qualifications, knowledge and skills. The job description must be concise. It must communicate (1) key qualifications; (2) the tasks the successful candidate will undertake; (3) the skills required to successfully carry-out these tasks and (4) the attributes candidates must possess for excellent performance of the job.

For this task the job description must include:

Title of the Position – as we are thinking forward to 2020 the title might not be in existence – free your mind and think up a job title! Example: the demographic statistics make clear the population of the UK is ageing therefore an occupation in the near future might be 50+ Life and Fitness Coach.

Key Qualifications – thinking about 2020 the qualifications might not again be in existence so again free your mind and think what qualifications would be essential. Example: the Key Qualification for a 50+ Life and Fitness Coach might be: (1) 50+ Life Coach Professional Qualifications; (2) BA in Life-Long Active Recreation; and (3) Professional Qualification in Using Virtual Environments for Emotional and Physical Health.

Key Responsibilities and Tasks – think about how these might link to cultural, social and technological changes. Example: for a 50+ Life and Fitness Coach the responsibilities might be (1) to be self-motivated and work from home; (2) to report on-line to a line-manager (3) to work with clients across the world via the internet and the 50+ Life-Fitness app; (3) to provide personalised on-line resources to enable to successful life-fitness coaching for clients.

Key Attributes for Excellent Performance: think about the attributes that will distinguish the excellent candidate from the rest for this job in 2020. Example: for a 50+ Life and Fitness Coach attributes might be: (1) to build on line a growing client base; (2) to individualise a service for clients 24/7 and (3) to mould developments in life and fitness coaching to a virtual environment.
